20/20: Young Guns—A Diane Sawyer Special (Enhanced DVD)
Product Description:
Millions of Americans have guns in their homes. These people say they need the guns for self-defense and that teaching kids about gun safety is enough to prevent tragedies. Millions of other Americans -- some of whom have experienced gun deaths firsthand -- are adamantly against guns in homes, saying that the room for error and fateful accidents is simply too great. In this riveting ABC News report, Diane Sawyer delves into the popular topic of children and gun safety. Interestingly, studies have shown that the age of gender of children makes a difference in how they react to guns. Hidden cameras reveal that young boys are more likely to touch guns when their parents aren't around, with more than half of the boys in this report not being able to resist the temptation. Viewers will see a deputy sheriff and his wife talk about the day their young son accidentally killed himself with a loaded gun they kept in their home. Today, that family does everything they can to help prevent this type of tragedy from happening to anyone else. No matter if you're pro-guns or anti-guns, 20/20: Young Guns—A Diane Sawyer Special sheds some real light on this hotly-debated topic of gun safety and children in our world today.

After massacres and school shootings such as the Sandy Hooky Massacre, the topic of gun control is always brought back into the national spotlight. Although many gun owners are responsible, several of them have lax protocols in their home when it comes to keeping their guns and ammunition secure. This results in children being able to access their guns, potentially shooting themselves, their parents or other children accidentally or intentionally. The number of accidents in the United States alone are alarming, with gun accidents killing at least one child every other day.
In this program hosted by Diane Sawyer, the truth about gun safety and children is unveiled. Hidden cameras show disturbing examples of what children do when their parents are not around. Some parents suggest that simply talking to their children about gun safety or teaching them the proper protocols is enough to prevent tragedies from occurring. The parents of victims of gun violence feel different, however, and they discuss why talking is not enough to prevent tragedies from occurring. This broadcast was on January 31, 2014. (41 minutes)
