Product Description:
Black Holes and Spider Webs: Mapping Murder (Enhanced DVD) Most people today are familiar with the concept of forensic science and how important physical evidence is in capturing dangerous criminals. But what happens when victims disappear, seemingly without a trace? Professor David Canter explains how geographical profiling can lead detectives in the right direction in this installment of Mapping Murder.

We are presented cases such as the Cromwell Street Murders, where 13 young women mysteriously disappeared and were presumed dead. Authorities explain how geographical profiling revealed a pattern of “black holes”, areas where multiple victims seemed to disappear, and how this pattern lead to the apprehension of notorious serial killers Fred and Rosemary West.

Later we learn how black hole profiling can reveal an intricate network of criminal accomplices. We are presented the extraordinarily disturbing case of Mark Dutroux, a serial killer and abuser who targeted children, who used his web-like network of criminal friends to abduct children and distribute child pornography. Ultimately we discover how the same heinous web that hid him led to his arrest.

Many serial killers prefer to lure victims to their home, such as the case of Jeffrey Dahmer, Fred and Rosemary West, and many others. In this program, Professor David Canter details the case of Fred and Rosemary West, a husband and wife murderous couple who concealed the bodies of 13 young women and girls who they sexually assaulted, tortured and then murdered. Canter describes how a seemingly inexplicable lack of bodies when people go missing can point to a nearby serial killer and can help narrow down their location.

The case of child pornographer, pedophile and serial killer Marc Dutroux is also highlighted in this program. Dutroux kidnapped tortured and sexually abused six girls between 1995 and 1996 who ranged in ages from 8 to 19, and he murdered four of them. He also was suspected of killing a former accomplice Bernard Weinstein, and his wife Michell Martin was convicted as his accomplice. A wide cluster of “black holes” or multiple missing people without bodies, can indicate the presence of a multiple person crime web, and experienced geographic profilers like David Canter can help investigators pinpoint suspects.
