Product Description:
How Is Science Being Used to Fight Crime? Ever Wondered? (Series 2) (Enhanced DVD) In the second episode of How is Science Being Used to Fight Crime? Ever Wondered?, Dr. Michael Taylor of ESR, a government-owned New Zealand Crown research institute, explains what back spatter analysis is. Nardia Foote is a grad student who works with Michael to better understand the process of how back spatter relates to cranial gunshots. Watts meets Nardia at a firing range, where she uses some molded gelatin and plastic casing to simulate a head, a high-speed camera and several different caliber firearms to simulate cranial shootings.

The second segment involves fingerprint analysis, where an expert explains how proper reagents are needed to analyze fingerprints. Viewers get to watch how she tests these reagents with blood-stained fingerprints. The third segment involves an experiment where a scientist places fingernails in different locales and conditions to determine to determine how long a victim has been deceased, judging by the DNA and RNA degradation. The fourth and fifth segments cover marine decomposition and underwater decomposition to determine how long a body has been submerged.

This enhanced DVD features a menu with chapters, allowing the viewer to watch the episode in whatever order they want. (22 minutes)

Forensic science has been increasingly used to help investigators determine the nature of crimes, find suspects and convict them in the court of law. In this episode, Dr. Michael Taylor of ESR, a New Zealand Crown research institute owned by the government, gives host John Watt a quick course in forensic science. He discusses his own field of specialization: splatter analysis. Nardia Foote is a graduate student who works with Michael to research the back splatter that results from cranial gunshots.

One way in which ballistic forensics research is conducted is by using ballistic gelatin, high speed cameras and firearms in a controlled experimental environment. Nardia meets with John at a firing range where an experiment is set up in order to determine exactly what happens when a human head is shot with firearms of varying caliber. With several different guns, a plastic casing and molded ballistic gelatin to recreate a head, and a high speed camera, Nardia simulates her own crime scene. Original Title: Forensics. This program is a of Ever Wondered? (Series 2). (22 minutes)
