Solar Storms: The Threat to Planet Earth (Enhanced DVD)
Product Description:
Scientists are discovering more activity on the surface of the sun that increases the possibility of solar storms. While these storms aren't directly dangerous to people - they are protected by the earth's atmosphere - the storms can certainly affect human lives by causing all kinds of glitches in the equipment we rely on. Solar storms can cause disruptions in magnetic fields, interrupting the power supply. They can also affect the workings of satellites, electric lines, radio transmissions, and computers we depend on so we can function in our everyday lives. Are you prepared for solar disturbances that could affect your power supply? Can you function without your computers, phones and electricity? This video will inform you and help you prepare for such disruptions, which are almost sure to occur as activity on the sun's surface increases. Watch this video now so you will know what to expect, how to prepare, and what to do.

On the surface of the sun, activity is becoming more frequent, which runs the risk of plasma storms. Plasma storms are not known to be dangerous to humans because of earth’s atmosphere, however equipment on the earth can be disrupted or damaged. Solar storms have been known to disrupt electrical transmission lines, cause power outages, damage satellites, and disrupt radio transmissions.
What do solar storms really mean for life on Earth, and is there a way to reduce their impact? This program will cover solar storms in detail, and it travels to the Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado as well as the National Solar Observatory in order to investigate. (59 minutes)
Segments in this video include:
Threat of Solar Storms – Scientists expect that there will be more frequent solar storms in the next few years, and as they increase in frequency they can be expected to disrupt more equipment on earth.
Quebec Blackout – Solar storms can cause blackouts and other problems. In 1989, a flare caused a change in magnetic fields which led to a power station overloaded. As a result, most of Quebec was in darkness for 9 hours. This event proved to be a valuable warning for scientists.
Sunspots: an Ancient Mystery – A solar telescope looks at sun spots, or dark areas of the sun that are several times larger than the size of the planet. Dr. Matthew Penn from the National Solar Observatory discusses how sunspots produce effects that are similar to thunderstorms and how they are also unpredictable.
Creating Solar Weather – Cary Forest explains that magnetic forces are what cause solar storms that fly at extremely high speeds off the sun’s surface with the potential to disrupt energy technology on the surface of the planet.
