Pomp and Perversion: Treasures of Ancient Rome (Enhanced DVD)

This program highlights Alastair Sooke on new travelling mission as he visits villas, caves and explores the underwater remains of a pleasure palace reigned by an emperor in order to unearth the different exemplary examples of frenzy and zeal and royal spectacle inherent in Roman architecture and art. Sooke describes the political importance of different monuments which include pillars of kings as gods and the Arch of Titus. He also gains an insight into the painted commemoration of erotic imagery.
The heritage of Hadrian- his art treasury built in Tibur Villa, splendid Antinous Mondragone, and the reconstructed Pantheon is shown in detail. Comprises of a discussion on Tiberius’ Villa at Sperlonga, Great Cameo of France, Trajan’s Column , the Warren Cup and the Prima Porta frescoes. The video has mature content.
