Oil Painting Winter Escape

Plein air painter Kevin Macpherson develops this large studio snow scene from several small studies.

Kevin Macpherson discusses his thoughts on color and composition, in depth, as he enlarges the studies. Learn how Macpherson retains the freshness and simplicity of the small works on a large canvas.

During the painting process Kevin pauses for self critiques and shares his impressions and goals with the viewer. He explains the logic of his limited palette: color harmony, warm and cool hues, value relationships and techniques of painterly painting.

Kevin Macpherson

A Master Plein Air Painter

Kevin Macpherson one of the countryís leading plein air painters, is highly respected among collectors and fellow artists alike. Past President of the Plein Air Painters of America, Kevin is a popular instructor throughout the country and abroad. His painting workshops are highly attended, often selling out years in advance.

Listening and watching Kevin as he paints this large studio work is more informative than viewing a live demonstration. The multiple cameras follow the action in close up detail from palette to canvas.

Born in 1956, this artistís work is nationally recognized and collected, having attracted the attention of major art collectors, including Roy Rose, the grand-nephew of acclaimed California plein air painter Guy Rose. Kevin has won numerous national awards, including so many in national Oil Painters of America competitions that he is the first artist in the organization to be elevated from Signature Member status to that of Master Signature Member.

Kevin excels in his ability to paint all subject matter: landscape, still life, and figurative works. Using spontaneous brushwork and candid color, Kevinís work reveals his interpretive and creative virtuosity. He easily manipulates the elements of an artistís "visual toolbox" to capture the mood of his subject, whether it be the dramatic light of southern France, the rugged beauty of the California coast, or the brilliance of dappled light through a floral still life. Kevinís work has been featured in many national magazines, Art of the West, Art Talk, U. S. Art, Wildlife Art and gracing the covers of Southwest Art, American Artist, International Artist, and The Artistís Magazine. Contibuting editor to Southwest Art Magazine, author of "The Artistís Voice, 2000". In addition to numerous gallery exhibitions, he has shown at the Gilcrease Museum, the Arizona State Capital and the Albuquerque Museum.

Kevin now makes his home in the mountains of Taos, New Mexico, merging his influences from years in Arizona with his childhood memories of New Jersey. Bitten with wanderlust, Kevin and his wife Wanda can be seen anywhere in the world painting en plein air.

This DVD is fabulous. I found it to be inspiring and paced well-even at its 4hr. length, which is an incredible achievement for the filmmaker as well as Mr. Macpherson. Color was nicely consistent even when there were camera changes from scene to scene. The painting segments are interspersed with interview segments which break it up nicely. The dvd uses split screens of the palette and KM painting in some places, so you really get all the details of his working style-not just closeups of the brush on canvas. It is amazing to see how much color variety he achieves with just the use of 3 colors and white! I enjoyed seeing his wonderful studio and the setting where he works. His manner is very engaging and thoughtful and he has a good sense of humor. His painting technique is very relaxed but completely masterful. I think I learned some new ways of looking at and seeing color through his instruction. I would have loved to see more of his work on the dvd--perhaps a gallery section added to the dvd would have been nice, but this is a minor criticism. It was a little pricey for an art instruction dvd but I think overall it was money well spent. I recommend it.
