Product Description:
January 2005, a devastating flood causes massive damage in Carlisle, UK. By the time the water receded, three people were dead and countless business and homes were destroyed. The transportation system was halted as the buses were damaged by flood water.

In Queensland, Australia, six years later 35 people were killed as flood waters affected over 28,000 homes and left approximately four times that without power. Causing over $2.38 million in damages, this was one of the most devastating floods in Australian history.

What caused these floods? What were the socio and economic effects? Is there a way that floods can be managed or prevented? The answer to these questions and more are answered in this documentary.

Flooding can be a necessary seasonal event in some areas; however, in others it causes devastation and lasting negative effects on the surrounding communities. Hydrologists, emergency risk experts, and environmental engineers lend their expertise to the causes of floods and how flooding can be prevented. While heavy rains are the biggest cause of floods, the possible contributions that people lend to the disasters are outlined. The pros and cons of several engineering techniques are analyzed. In addition, this DVD will explain how a flood hydrograph is developed. Produced in Australia there is an available worksheet that is accessible online.
