Product Description:
Home Is Where the Heart Lies: Mapping Murder (Enhanced DVD) is a documentary that explores the fact that criminals often commit their crimes where they live rather than traveling long distances to do so. According to Professor David Canter, "The fact is that most offenders do not travel very far to commit their crimes. Like you and me, their home is where their heart lies." As a part of this video, Professor Canter uses examples to support this point that he makes. He speaks of the case of Jill Dando, a British TV personality who was killed on her own doorstep by a man who lived a mere few streets away from her. In addition, he goes into the case of the Railway Rapists, who were an infamous duo would earned their name by raping people up and down a rail line that was close to the residence of John Duffy, who was one of them. In two cases, they also murdered their victims. He also goes into the very well known example of Jack the Ripper, who is thought to have lived in the East End of London and is known to have terrorized a variety of people who lived there as well. The documentary also takes a look at the Soho cholera epidemic of 1854, which ended up being curbed by geographical mapping that was done by Dr. John Snow, is also included. This is an episode of the series "Mapping Murder: Investigative Psychology Meets Geographical Profiling." The run time for this program is 24 minutes, and it was put together in 2002.

The reality is that most criminals do not travel very far when they commit their crimes; they are usually more comfortable committing crimes closer to where they live. Professor David Canter affirms this, “Like you and me, their home is where their heart lies.” Canter uses the case of British TV personality Jill Dando to make his point. She was murdered by a man who lived just a few houses away right on her doorstep. Many other serial rapists and murderers follow the same behavioral pattern, and many one time offenders also often prefer to commit their crimes near their home area.

Another case is described by Professor Canter; the Railway Rapists, two men who murdered and raped along a rail line that was near perpetrator John Duffy’s home. Jack the Ripper also focused his murdering crimes around the East End of London and most likely lived in that area. The Soho cholera epidemic was brought under control by the geographical mapping of Dr. John Snow, and this case is also highlighted in this program. This is a part of the series Mapping Murder: Investigative Psychology Meets Geographic Profiling. (23 minutes)
