Mauritania is a West African nation where the institution of slavery is still going strong. While slavery is officially outlawed, it has deep roots in the culture. As a result, almost a quarter of Mauritania's citizenry are slaves.

This film details the journey of Bilal, a 16-year old slave who was given up by his mother when he was only 2 years old. It shows Bilal's struggle to locate his mother, until he is finally able to reunite with her.This film exposes the harsh realities that slaves live every day in the country of Mauritania. While there has been a concerted effort to rid the country of slavery, it has not yet been successful.
