In this heartbreaking tale of exploitation, viewers follow young Indonesian girls trapped in the dangerous sex trade world. Almost half of all sex trafficking in Batam, Indonesia is conducted with children. Prostitutes, such as teenagers Lina and Diana, face a harrowing future even after being rescued from the brothels that hold them for sexual slavery.

Such brothels are purported to be places of rehabilitation, though an undercover look reveals their true nature. Local authorities appear to turn the other cheek, some even refusing to acknowledge such places exist. While the police are hesitant to react, some are even on the take, a small group of advocates and survivors work to rescue the girls on their own.

Inside the Child Sex Trade is an intimate look inside one of the worlds darkest, most heinous industries. Not only are we exposed to the world of corruption and greed that keeps such a business working, we learn the terrible cost it has on minor sex workers, who face poverty and discrimination for being labeled “damaged goods”. The struggle of child sex slaves has had extensive media and charitable attention, but outsiders rarely have the chance to see inside their troubled and miserable world. Recently, a crew gained access to the hidden world of child sex slavery. The crew was able to interview Lina and Diana, two teenage girls forced to be prostitutes in a brothel located in Batam, Indonesia. Batam is a small island and it is located South of Singapore. It is known for its extensive tourism industry and for having a “red light district” similar to parts areas of Thailand and other countries.
This program focuses on the plight of these two girls and the plan to save them. The crew filmed every event that led to the rescue of these girls. It is a haunting, harrowing and confronting documentary on how young children are lured into the world of child sex slavery. The girls are sent back home to their village after they are examined at the hospital. They are concerned for their future, however. One girl points out, “We’re damaged goods now.” This program contains explicit language. (39 minutes)
