Man and Music. {Discontinued.} This series reaches far beyond the conventional histories, showing music as part of a larger social, intellectual, religious, and historical context. It demonstrates how music was shaped by power and patronage and how changing tastes and political circumstances altered the role of the composer and the makeup of the audience. The programs are photographed in the places for which the music was composed. Most important, the music is performed on original instruments whenever possible, and the differences in sound and technique are explained as well as demonstrated. The performances are consistently first-class, with an emphasis on authenticity. 22-part series, 53 minutes each.
