The Age of Reason. {Discontinued.} This is the age of the Baroque, the age of the grand musical spectacle: opera and the Church’s answer to opera, the oratorio. Virtuosity in secular music emerged, together with professional musicians and singers who created a new kind of music—no longer madrigal in form, this had a dominant melodic line for a solo singer.
