Product Description:
Solitary Confinement: No Way Out of the Monster Factory (Enhanced DVD) On any given day, approximately 80,000 inmates in the United States are forced to spend time in solitary confinement. Given as a form of punishment, solitary confinement removes an inmate from the general population where he spends all of his time isolated from human contact, aside from the limited interactions with the prison staff.

This inhumane form of torture has led to congressional hearings, UN reports and hunger strikes among prisoners in an effort to put an end to the practice. Dan Harris, an ABC news reporter, agreed to spend 48 hours in solitary to experience the pain prisoners go through in isolation.

Watch as Harris copes with the lack of privacy in solitary, bad food, intense boredom and lights that remained on continuously due to increased security at the Denver County Jail. Listen to him explain the screams of other inmates and experience his brief but intense stay in solitary – also referred to as the hotbox.

Customer Reviews

Throughout the United States there are over 80,000 inmates in solitary confinement. These include some of the most violent inmates and others who frequently break prison rules. However, the practice of solitary confinement has resulted in UN reports, congressional hearings, and even hunger strikes by inmates. The question of whether solitary confinement is torture or inhumane is one that has yet to be answered.

In this ABC News program, Dan Harris spends 48 hours in solitary confinement at a Denver Jail to find out what the experience is like. During the course of his incarceration he has to deal with a lack of privacy, lights that are on every hour of the day for security purposes, and a level of boredom that he has never experienced in his life.

Like others who have experienced solitary confinement, Harris found the experience to be disturbing and difficult. Harris claimed that the worst part of the experience was the screaming of other inmates, saying “The sounds of my fellow inmates losing their minds was incredibly unsettling.” This broadcast is dated September 20, 2012, and viewer discretion is advised.
