Product Description:
When ex-convicts return to society, they may face more challenges than they experienced when they were in prison. The desire to find employment and build a new life can quickly be overtaken by the daily struggle to eat, sleep, and overcome the stigma of having been incarcerated.

The film follows the separate yet similar cases of Kim and Xavier, both ex-convicts released into a world that could quickly tempt them back into a life of crime. For Kim, the strength she takes from her newly-found sobriety is tested by the basic need to find food and shelter. Her case exposes the limits of support that society makes available to ex-convicts, with free public resources and the Offender Aid and Restoration (OAR) program struggling to bridge the gap. Violent offender Xavier faces more character-based challenges following his completion of a 13-year sentence. Potential employers remain suspicious of his past crimes, while his race and threats from former inmates also work against his attempts at rehabilitation.

This documentary and the individuals it presents clearly show viewers the challenges faced by people recently released from prison. Viewers will be helped to understand the eventual repercussions of a criminal justice system that places a strong emphasis on punishment but overlooks key elements of rehabilitation.

Customer Reviews

The road back to society can be challenging for ex-convicts, and although it is often paved with good intentions, much can go wrong. A freed person doesn’t have much of a local support system to help them with their transition. The question remains of whether or not public services are effective at providing ex-convicts with what they need in order to reintegrate back into society. There is also the question of whether or not the “system” is a trap or a safety net and whether or not it can be as confining as prison.
This film documents two separate case studies of convicts whose incarceration has ended but who also embark on a new path of hardship after prison. Their fresh start comes with several new challenges, hard-won dignity and hard luck. Kim has been jailed since her mid-20s and is emerging prison with nothing, and soon finds herself sleeping on a park bench. Xavier has served 13 years for murder. Will Kim fare better than him? How does Xavier find a decent job with his track record? Viewers will be able to come to their own conclusions by the end of the program about the human costs and hidden costs of maintaining a so-called “safe” society. Contains mature subject matter and profanity. (59 minutes)
