The energy of the sun along with the mountains and oceans create gigantic weather systems that collide with each other in ways that are unpredictable. In spite of this, people expect weather forecasts to be accurate.
Forecasting in History – In years past we used to rely on guessing and folk lore to try to predict the weather. In the Renaissance, the barometer was created and this made forecasting much more accurate. The invention of the telegraph made it possible to find out what the weather is like in other parts of the world.
Breakthroughs in Forecasting – Lewis Richardson created a mathematical model for weather forecasting in 1922. After computers were invented, the idea took off. Satellites and radar give the information needed to see how weather systems develop, and weather prediction technology has significantly advanced in recent years.
